simulacrum

A simulacrum (plural: simulacra from , which means "likeness, similarity"), is a representation or imitation of a person or thing. The word was first recorded in the English language in the late 16th century, used to describe a representation, such as a statue or a painting, especially of a god. By the late 19th century, it had gathered a secondary association of inferiority: an image without the substance or qualities of the original. Philosopher Fredric Jameson offers photorealism as an example of artistic simulacrum, where a painting is sometimes created by copying a photograph that is itself a copy of the real. Other art forms that play with simulacra include trompe-l'œil, pop art, Italian neorealism, and French New Wave.

Als Simulacrum oder Simulakrum (Plural: Simulacra oder Simulakren) bezeichnet man ein wirkliches oder vorgestelltes Ding, das mit etwas oder jemand anderem verwandt ist oder ihm ähnlich ist. Der lateinische Ausdruck simulacrum leitet sich über simulo („Bild, Abbild, Spiegelbild, Traumbild, Götzenbild, Trugbild“) von simul („ähnlich, gleich“) ab. Die Bedeutung kann abwertend gemeint sein im Sinne eines trügerischen Scheins, sie kann aber auch positiv verstanden werden im Rahmen eines Konzepts produktiver Phantasie.

Simulacrum est un album de compositions de John Zorn jouées par un trio composé de Kenny Grohowski, Matt Hollenberg et John Medeski. John Zorn a arrangé les pièces et dirigé le groupe lors de l'enregistrement de l'album. La musique est un mélange de métal, de jazz et d'éléments minimalistes et bruitistes.

Un simulacre désigne une apparence qui ne renvoie à aucune réalité sous-jacente, et prétend valoir pour cette réalité elle-même. C'est là, du moins, le sens grec d’eidôlon (εἴδωλον), qui a donné idole en latin, et qui est traduit par simulacre, par opposition à l'icône (eikôn, εἰκών), traduit par copie: la copie renvoie toujours à l'imitation du réel, sans dissimuler celle-ci (voir Le Sophiste de Platon). L’eidôlon s'oppose alors à l’eidos ou l’idea [ἰδέα], traduit par Forme et présent dans le Cratyle .
