Solid is one of the four fundamental states of matter (the others being liquid, gas, and plasma). It is characterized by structural rigidity and resistance to changes of shape or volume. Unlike a liquid, a solid object does not flow to take on the shape of its container, nor does it expand to fill the entire volume available to it like a gas does. The atoms in a solid are tightly bound to each other, either in a regular geometric lattice (crystalline solids, which include metals and ordinary ice) or irregularly (an amorphous solid such as common window glass).

In computer programming, SOLID (Single responsibility, Open-closed, Liskov substitution, Interface segregation and Dependency inversion) is a mnemonic acronym introduced by Michael Feathers for the "first five principles" named by Robert C. Martin in the early 2000s that stands for five basic principles of object-oriented programming and design. The principles, when applied together, intend to make it more likely that a programmer will create a system that is easy to maintain and extend over time. The principles of SOLID are guidelines that can be applied while working on software to remove code smells by causing the programmer to refactor the software's source code until it is both legible and extensible. It is part of an overall strategy of agile and Adaptive Software Development.

Festkörper (auch Feststoff) bezeichnet in den Naturwissenschaften Materie im festen Aggregatzustand. Im engeren Sinne versteht man hierunter auch einen Stoff, welcher bei einer Temperatur von 20 °C einen festen Aggregatzustand aufweist, wobei die Bezeichnung Feststoff in diesem Fall stoffspezifisch, jedoch nicht temperaturspezifisch ist. Festkörper haben im technischen Sprachgebrauch eine gewisse Mindest-Ausdehnung, die aber nicht scharf definiert ist. Sie sind demnach makroskopische Körper – im Gegensatz zu mikroskopischen Körpern. Zum Beispiel gilt im Regelfall ein Makromolekül für sich allein noch nicht als Festkörper. Materie im Übergangsbereich bezeichnet man als Cluster.

Ze werd bedacht door Michael Feathers voor de eerste vijf principes die Robert C. Martin aangaf aan het begin van de jaren 2000 De afkorting staat voor de vijf belangrijkste principes in het object-georiënteerd programmeren. Deze principes samen maken het waarschijnlijker dat een programmeur een systeem zal maken dat duurzamer is en gemakkelijk te onderhouden of uit te breiden. De SOLID-principes maken deel uit van een meer globale strategie van agile ontwikkeling en adaptief programmeren.

Solid is een framework voor KDE 4 dat apparaten integreert. Het werkt met gelijkaardige principes zoals KDE's multimediaprogramma Phonon; in plaats van de hardware zelf te beheren, maakt het bestaande oplossingen toegankelijk via een enkele API. De huidige oplossing maakt gebruik van HAL, NetworkManager en BlueZ (de officiële Bluetooth-stack van Linux). Alle onderdelen kunnen echter vervangen worden zonder de applicatie te beschadigen, waardoor programma's die Solid gebruiken extreem flexibel en portable zijn (draagbaar, geen installatie behoevend). Er wordt ook gewerkt aan een Solid-backend voor de Windows-port van KDE gebaseerd op Windows Management Instrumentation.
