Sorption is a physical and chemical process by which one substance becomes attached to another. Specific cases of sorption are treated in the following articles:

• Absorption – "the incorporation of a substance in one state into another of a different state" (e.g., liquids being absorbed by a solid or gases being absorbed by a liquid);
• Adsorption – the physical adherence or bonding of ions and molecules onto the surface of another phase (e.g., reagents adsorbed to a solid catalyst surface);
• Ion exchange – an exchange of ions between two electrolytes or between an electrolyte solution and a complex.

Sorption ist eine Sammelbezeichnung für Vorgänge, die zu einer Anreicherung eines Stoffes innerhalb einer Phase oder auf einer Grenzfläche zwischen zwei Phasen führen. Die Anreicherung innerhalb einer Phase nennt man genauer Absorption, die an der Grenzfläche Adsorption. James William McBain führte 1909 den Oberbegriff Sorption für Prozesse ein, bei denen nicht eindeutig zwischen Ad- und Absorption unterschieden werden kann.

La sorption est le processus par lequel une substance est adsorbée ou absorbée (par un « sorbant ») sur ou dans une autre substance. Elle résulte de l'action de molécules de gaz ou de liquide mis en contact avec un matériau solide, et qui adhèrent à sa surface (adsorption) ou s'incorpore dans la totalité de son volume (absorption). Dans les deux cas, la molécule fixée n'est plus présente dans le solvant.
