A steroid is an organic compound with four rings arranged in a specific configuration. Examples include the dietary lipid cholesterol, the sex hormones estradiol and testosterone and the anti-inflammatory drug dexamethasone. Steroids have two principal biological functions: certain steroids (such as cholesterol) are important components of cell membranes which alter membrane fluidity, and many steroids are signaling molecules which activate steroid hormone receptors.

Steroide (gr. , von stereós „fest“ und -oid, Latinisierung von altgr.  -oeidḗs, von eîdos „Ähnlichkeit“) sind eine Stoffklasse der Lipide (Moleküle mit lipophilen Gruppen, in der Regel wasserunlöslich). Steroide sind Derivate des Kohlenwasserstoffs Steran (Cyclopentanoperhydrophenanthren).

Steroïden zijn lipiden met vier karakteristieke koolstofringstructuren. Ze zijn opgebouwd als een triterpeen (C30). Cholesterol dient als uitgangsstof van de steroïden.

Les stéroïdes sont un groupe de lipides dérivant de triterpénoïdes (lipides à 30 atomes de carbones), majoritairement le squalène. Ils se caractérisent par un noyau cyclopentanophénanthrénique (stérane) hydrophobe partiellement ou totalement hydrogéné. Habituellement, les carbones C₁₀, C₁₃ sont liés à un groupe méthyle -CH₃ et le carbone C₁₇ à un groupe alkyle. Par extension, les stéroïdes incluent également les lipides dont le noyau cyclopentanophénanthrénique a été modifié par scission d'une liaison et l'ajout ou la délétion d'un carbone.
