Suggestion is the psychological process by which one person guides the thoughts, feelings, or behaviour of another. Nineteenth century writers on psychology such as William James used the words "suggest" and "suggestion" in senses close to those they have in common speech—one idea was said to suggest another when it brought that other idea to mind. Early scientific studies of hypnosis by Clark Leonard Hull and others extended the meaning of these words in a special and technical sense (Hull, 1933). The original neuro-psychological theory of hypnotic suggestion was based upon the ideo-motor reflex response of William B. Carpenter and James Braid.

Der Begriff Suggestion wurde im 17./18. Jahrhundert eingeführt und bezeichnet die manipulative Beeinflussung einer Vorstellung oder Empfindung mit der Folge, dass die Manipulation nicht wahrgenommen wird oder zumindest zeitweise für das Bewusstsein nicht abrufbereit ist. Etymologisch ist er zurückführbar auf das lateinische Substantiv suggestio, -onis, was so viel bedeutet wie Hinzufügung, Eingebung oder Einflüsterung, oder auf das lateinische Verb suggerere (zuführen, unterschieben).

La suggestion désigne en premier lieu l'influence d'une idée sur le comportement, la pensée, la perception, le jugement ou la mémoire. Une personne peut donc accomplir un acte ou élaborer une pensée de son propre chef, ou encore parce que cet acte ou cette pensée lui sont dictés par une idée. C'est cet acte (ou cette pensée), tantôt involontaire, tantôt inconscient, qui est appelé suggestion.
