Surround sound is a technique for enriching the sound reproduction quality of an audio source with additional audio channels from speakers that surround the listener (surround channels), providing sound from a 360° radius in the horizontal plane (2D) as opposed to "screen channels" (centre, [front] left, and [front] right) originating only from the listener's forward arc.

5.1 (sprich „fünf punkt eins“), genauer Surround-Sound 5.1, bezeichnet Mehrkanal-Tonsysteme, bei denen fünf Hauptkanäle und ein separater Tieftoneffektkanal zur Verfügung stehen.

Raumklang ist die Bezeichnung für einen räumlichen Klangeindruck bei Tonaufnahmen (engl.: ambience). Im weiteren Sinne können auch Theateraufführungen dazugerechnet werden, die ein räumliches Klangerlebnis vermitteln.

El sonido envolvente (también llamado "Surround" por el origen del término en inglés) es una técnica cuyo objetivo consiste en enriquecer la calidad de la reproducción sonora de una fuente de audio con canales adicionales provenientes de altavoces que envuelven al oyente (canales envolventes), proveyendo sonido en un radio de 360° en el plano horizontal (2D), a diferencia del que se obtiene por medio de "canales en pantalla" (canal central, canal izquierdo y canal derecho), los cuales se encuentran solo al frente del oyente.

Le son multicanal englobe une certaine quantité de formats qui se définissent par le nombre de pistes et le nombre de canaux ou voies de reproduction (HP ou famille de HP).
