Surveying or land surveying is the technique, profession, and science of determining the terrestrial or three-dimensional position of points and the distances and angles between them. A land surveying professional is called a land surveyor. These points are usually on the surface of the Earth, and they are often used to establish land maps and boundaries for ownership, locations like building corners or the surface location of subsurface features, or other purposes required by government or civil law, such as property sales.

Vermessung wird einerseits als Synonym für Geodäsie, andererseits für das Messen bestimmter Größen benutzt, insbesondere die Erfassung des tatsächlichen und rechtlichen Bestandes von Teilen der Erdoberfläche. Dabei versteht man unter „Messung“ das quantitative Erfassen einer geometrischen Größe (z. B. Strecke, Winkel, Höhe) und unter „Vermessung“ die Gesamtheit aller für die Erfassung eines Objektes (Grundstück, Gebäude, Straße usw.) erforderlichen Messungen.

Landmeetkunde is de toegepaste wetenschap die zich bezighoudt met het meten van land, meer precies, de onderlinge positie van punten op het aardoppervlak. Dit gebeurt onder meer met behulp van een tachymeter (totalstation) en/of een theodoliet, tegenwoordig ook wel met behulp van GPS en Civiele-ontwerpsoftware.
