Tar is a black mixture of hydrocarbons and free carbon  obtained from a wide variety of organic materials through destructive distillation. Tar can be produced from coal, wood, petroleum, or peat. Production and trade in pine-derived tar was a major contributor in the economies of Northern Europe and Colonial America. Its main use was in preserving wooden vessels against rot. The largest user was the Royal Navy. Demand for tar declined with the advent of iron and steel ships.

In computing, tar is a computer software utility for collecting many files into one archive file, often referred to as a tarball, for distribution or backup purposes. The name is derived from tape archive, as it was originally developed to write data to sequential I/O devices. The archive data sets created by tar contain various file system parameters, such as time stamps, ownership, file access permissions, and  directory organization. The file structure to store this information was later standardized in POSIX.1-1988 and later POSIX.1-2001. and became a format supported by most modern file archiving systems.

Teer (von mittelniederdeutsch: ter „Holzteer, Harz“, verwandt mit germanisch *trewwa- „Baum“) ist ein bräunliches bis schwarzes, zähflüssiges Gemisch organischer Verbindungen, das durch zersetzende thermische Behandlung (Pyrolyse) organischer Naturstoffe gewonnen wird. Eine andere, auf das spanische bzw. arabische Wort al-quitrán zurückgehende Bezeichnung für Teer ist Goudron (das französische Wort für Teer), zum Beispiel in „Goudronanstrich“.

Tar se refiere en Informática a un formato de archivos ampliamente usado en entornos UNIX, identificados por el sufijo de archivo .tar.. Además hace referencia al programa para la manipulación de archivos que es estándar en estos entornos, pero no incluye la compresión de los mismos.

De tar is een langhalsluit een tokkelinstrument met vijf tot acht snaren. Het instrument is verbreid van Perzië (Iran), Turkije tot in Georgië.

Teer is een product dat ontstaat bij het verhitten van plantaardig materiaal zoals hout (wat bruine teer oplevert) of steenkool (wat koolteer geeft), onder uitsluiting van lucht (pyrolyse). Het is een donkere, stroperige of kleverige taaie substantie met een karakteristieke geur, afhankelijk van de oorsprong. Het gebruik van teer werd in Europa verboden met het van kracht worden van Europese richtlijn 98/08 (biociden).

Les goudrons (de l'arabe قَطْران — qaṭrān) sont des produits issus de poix modifiée de résineux, produits par distillation destructive sous pyrolyse. Ils sont composés de centaines de substances chimiques, dont plusieurs sont considérées comme cancérigènes ou potentiellement dangereuses.

Le programme tar (de l'anglais tape archiver, littéralement « archiveur pour bande ») est un logiciel d'archivage de fichiers standard des systèmes de type UNIX. Il a été créé dans les premières versions d'UNIX et standardisé par les normes POSIX.1-1988 puis POSIX.1-2001. Il existe plusieurs implémentations tar, la plus couramment utilisée étant GNU tar.

Le târ est un instrument à cordes pincées trouvé en Perse (Iran), en Azerbaïdjan, en Géorgie, en Arménie, en Turquie, en Ouzbékistan et au Tadjikistan. C'est un luth à long manche avec un corps en forme de double cœur. Le mot تار târ signifie "corde" en persan. Les interprètes sont appelés tarzen. Le tar est le principal symbole de la culture azerbaïdjanaise. En 2003, le mougham azerbaïdjanais a été inscrit au patrimoine culturel immatériel de l'humanité par l’UNESCO et a créé des conditions pour la reconnaissance du tar, du kamantcha et du gaval, les trois instruments composant le mougham. ont été inscrites en 2012 par l'UNESCO sur la liste représentative du patrimoine culturel immatériel de l'humanité.
