Theatre or theater is a collaborative form of fine art that uses live performers to present the experience of a real or imagined event before a live audience in a specific place, often a stage. The performers may communicate this experience to the audience through combinations of gesture, speech, song, music, and dance. Elements of art and stagecraft are used to enhance the physicality, presence and immediacy of the experience. The specific place of the performance is also named by the word "theatre" as derived from the Ancient Greek θέατρον (théatron, "a place for viewing"), itself from θεάομαι (theáomai, "to see", "to watch", "to observe").

Theater (von théatron ‚Schaustätte‘, ‚Theater‘; von θεάομαι theaomai ‚anschauen‘) ist die Bezeichnung für eine szenische Darstellung eines inneren und äußeren Geschehens als künstlerische Kommunikation zwischen Akteuren (Darstellern) und dem Publikum. Mit dem Wort Theater kann das Gebäude gemeint sein, in dem Theater gespielt wird (siehe Theaterarchitektur), oder der Prozess des Theater-Spielens oder auch allgemein eine Gruppe von Menschen, die Theater machen, also eine Theatergruppe.

Theater is een verzamelnaam voor kunstvormen waarbij acteurs levende voorstellingen maken voor een publiek. Wanneer met deze kunstvorm wordt opgetreden op een toneelvloer gaat het soms om een toneelvoorstelling.

Le théâtre ou genre dramatique, est à la fois l'art de la représentation d'un drame, ou d'une comédie, est un genre littéraire particulier, et l'édifice dans lequel se déroulent les spectacles de théâtre.
