Tobacco is a product prepared from the leaves of the tobacco plant by curing them. The plant is part of the genus Nicotiana and of the Solanaceae (nightshade) family. While more than 70 species of tobacco are known, the chief commercial crop is N. tabacum. The more potent variant N. rustica is also used around the world.

Tabak ist ein pflanzliches Produkt, das aus den Laubblättern von Pflanzen der Gattung Tabak (Nicotiana) hergestellt wird. Von den etwa 75 Arten der Gattung haben jedoch nur zwei Bedeutung für die Tabakproduktion: Der Virginische Tabak (Nicotiana tabacum) und der Bauern-Tabak (Nicotiana rustica). Die Nicotiana-Arten sind überwiegend in Südamerika heimisch, einige auch in Australien und Nordamerika. Zu den wichtigsten Bestandteilen des Tabaks zählen Nicotin, ein farbloses, flüssiges Alkaloid, sowie Ammonium, Cellulose und Protein. In geringen Mengen auch Naturharz, Pflanzenwachs, Stärke, Zucker, Gerbsäure, Äpfelsäure, Zitronensäure, Oxalsäure und die anorganischen Inhaltsstoffe Nitrat, Kalium, Natrium, Calcium, Magnesium, Eisen und Chlor. Noch sind nicht alle Stoffe bekannt, aber man schätzt, dass beispielsweise in einer Zigarette und deren Rauch 6.000–12.000 chemische Substanzen enthalten sind. Wenngleich Tabakrauchen als gesundheitsschädlich eingestuft wird und die Tabakwerbung stark beschränkt ist, so ist die Tabakindustrie regional doch ein bedeutsamer Arbeitgeber und die Tabaksteuer eine wichtige Einnahme zahlreicher Staaten.
