Torch Song was a British synthpop and dance band of the early 1980s consisting of William OrbitLaurie Mayer and Grant Gilbert. In 1985, Gilbert left to pursue other projects and was officially replaced by Rico Conning, a long-time friend. After the release of Exhibit A in 1987, Orbit concentrated on solo work and remixes. He continued to write with both Mayer and Conning and in 1995 they reformed Torch Song to record and release Toward the Unknown Region.

Torch song
A torch song is a sentimental love song, typically one in which the singer laments an unrequited or lost love, either where one party is oblivious to the existence of the other, where one party has moved on, or where a romantic affair has affected the relationship. The term comes from the saying, "to carry a torch for someone", or to keep aflame the light of an unrequited love. Tommy Lyman started the use in his praise of My Melancholy Baby.
