Transition Region and Coronal Explorer (TRACE) was a NASA heliophysics and solar observatory designed to investigate the connections between fine-scale magnetic fields and the associated plasma structures on the Sun by providing high resolution images and observation of the solar photosphere and transition region to the corona. A main focus of the TRACE instrument is the fine structure of coronal loops low in the solar atmosphere. TRACE is the fourth spacecraft in the Small Explorer program, launched on April 2, 1998, and obtaining its last science image in 2010.

Het alignement is het geheel van rechte lijnen, bogen en overgangsbogen waarmee de as van een verkeersweg, spoorbaan of waterweg is gedefinieerd in drie dimensies. Meestal wordt er onderscheid gemaakt naar het horizontaal alignement en verticaal alignement.

TRACE (Transition Region And Coronal Explorer) est un télescope spatial de la NASA conçu pour étudier la connexion entre le champ magnétique à petite échelle du Soleil et la géométrie du plasma coronal, à travers des images haute résolution de la photosphère et de la région de transition vers la couronne. Un des principaux objectifs de TRACE est l'observation des boucles magnétiques de la basse couronne.

De manière générale, une trace est l'influence d'un événement sur son environnement. On utilise parfois le terme d'empreinte (voir aussi Pistage).
