translation

Translation is the communication of the meaning of a source-language text by means of an equivalent target-language text. While interpreting—the facilitating of oral or sign-language communication between users of different languages—antedates writing, translation began only after the appearance of written literature. There exist partial translations of the Sumerian Epic of Gilgamesh (ca. 2000 BCE) into Southwest Asian languages of the second millennium BCE.

In proof theory, a discipline within mathematical logic, double-negation translation, sometimes called negative translation, is a general approach for embedding classical logic into intuitionistic logic, typically by translating formulas to formulas which are classically equivalent but intuitionistically inequivalent. Particular instances of double-negation translation include Glivenko's translation for propositional logic, and the Gödel–Gentzen translation and Kuroda's translation for first-order logic.

Translatio (lateinisch für „Übertragen, Übertragung, Versetzung“) steht für:

• Translatio, Reliquientranslation, im Christentum die feierliche Übertragung von Reliquien von einem Ort zum anderen
• Translation (Kirchenrecht), die nach dem CIC von 1917 verbotene Übertragung eines Bischofsstuhls an einen schon in einer anderen Diözese zum Bischof gewählten Kleriker
• Translatio (Literaturpreis), österreichischer „Staatspreis für literarische Übersetzung“
• Translatio imperii, politische Theorie des Mittelalters, der zufolge ein Weltreich das andere ablöst

Vertalen is het overzetten van een tekst van een brontaal, de taal waarin de oorspronkelijke tekst is geschreven, in een doeltaal, de taal waarin de overgezette tekst of vertaling is gesteld.

La traduction (dans son acception principale de traduction interlinguale) est le fait de faire passer un texte rédigé dans une langue (« langue source », ou « langue de départ ») dans une autre langue (« langue cible », ou « langue d'arrivée »). Elle met en relation au moins deux langues et deux cultures, et parfois deux époques.
