turret

In architecture, a turret (from Italian: torretta, little tower; Latin: turris, tower) is a small tower that projects vertically from the wall of a building such as a medieval castle. Turrets were used to provide a projecting defensive position allowing covering fire to the adjacent wall in the days of military fortification. As their military use faded, turrets were used for decorative purposes, as in the Scottish baronial style.

Eine Tourelle (franz. für Türmchen, als Diminutiv von Tour = Turm) ist ein wie ein Teil eines Turms aussehendes Fassadenteil, das von seiner Statik her nie frei stehend ist, sondern sich aus Wänden oder Mauern herauswölbt oder aus ihnen hervorspringt.

La poivrière est une guérite de maçonnerie à toit conique placée en encorbellement à l'angle d'un bastion, de châteaux forts, de tours, de maisons, d'hôtels particuliers ou de ponts. Elle désigne plus tard une échauguette ronde ou une tour polygonale en encorbellement et à toit conique, prenant parfois le nom de tourelle. Par extension, elle désigne toute construction surmontée d'un toit en forme de cône.
