Typography is the art and technique of arranging type to make written language legible, readable, and appealing when displayed. The arrangement of type involves selecting typefaces, point size, line length, line-spacing (leading), letter-spacing (tracking), and adjusting the space within letters pairs (kerning). The term typography is also applied to the style, arrangement, and appearance of the letters, numbers, and symbols created by the process. Type design is a closely related craft, sometimes considered part of typography; most typographers do not design typefaces, and some type designers do not consider themselves typographers. Typography also may be used as a decorative device, unrelated to communication of information.

Der Begriff Typografie oder Typographie ( typographía, von týpos ‚Schlag‘, ‚Abdruck‘, ‚Figur‘, ‚Typ‘ und -grafie) lässt sich auf mehrere Bereiche anwenden. Im traditionellen Sinne bezieht sich die Typografie auf die Kunst und das Handwerk des Druckens, bei dem mit beweglichen Lettern (Typen) die Texte zusammengesetzt werden, insbesondere in Hochdruckverfahren. In der Medientheorie steht Typografie für gedruckte Schrift in Abgrenzung zu Handschrift (Chirografie) und elektronischen sowie nicht literalen Texten.

Typografie, van het Griekse τύπος (tupos: slag, vorm, afdruk) en γράφειν (grafein: schrijven), is de kunst van het vormgeven, zetten en drukken van tekst, zowel voor functionele als esthetische doeleinden.

La typographie (souvent abrégé typo) désigne les différents procédés de composition et d’impression utilisant des caractères et des formes en relief, ainsi que l’art et la manière d’utiliser les différents types de caractères dans un but esthétique et pratique.
