Disgust is an emotional response of revulsion to something considered offensive, distasteful, or unpleasant. In The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals, Charles Darwin wrote that disgust is a sensation that refers to something revolting. Disgust is experienced primarily in relation to the sense of taste (either perceived or imagined), and secondarily to anything which causes a similar feeling by sense of smell, touch, or vision. Musically sensitive people may even be disgusted by the cacophony of inharmonious sounds. Research continually has proven a relationship between disgust and anxiety disorders such as arachnophobia, blood-injection-injury type phobias, and contamination fear related obsessive–compulsive disorder (also known as OCD).

Lijden is het ondergaan van smart en ellende. Onderscheid kan worden gemaakt tussen lichamelijk en geestelijk lijden. Het lijden kan sterk variëren in intensiteit en tijdsduur en is een herkenbare ervaring voor vele mensen.

La souffrance, ou la douleur au sens large, est une expérience de désagrément et d'aversion liée à un dommage ou à une menace de dommage chez l'individu. La souffrance est l'élément fondamental qui constitue la valence négative des phénomènes affectifs.

La sofferenza è una condizione di dolore, che può riguardare il corpo e/o il vissuto emotivo del soggetto.

Cierpienie – ból, doznanie braku lub straty doświadczane przez osobę. Cierpienie jest jednym z głównych problemów, na który dają odpowiedź religie. Dla religii monoteistycznych, jak judaizm czy chrześcijaństwo obecność cierpienia w świecie jest podstawowym pytaniem o pojęcie wszechmocnego dobrego Boga, który dopuszcza cierpienie swoich stworzeń. Również w buddyzmie, określane w języku pali jako dukkha, cierpienie jest kluczowym zagadnieniem. Do szeroko rozumianego motywu cierpienia niejednokrotnie sięga również literatura (np. Cierpienia młodego Wertera). Jako uczucie jest ono również opisywane przez  psychologię.
