vasoconstrictor

Vasoconstriction is the narrowing of the blood vessels resulting from contraction of the muscular wall of the vessels, in particular the large arteries and small arterioles. The process is the opposite of vasodilation, the widening of blood vessels. The process is particularly important in staunching hemorrhage and acute blood loss. When blood vessels constrict, the flow of blood is restricted or decreased, thus retaining body heat or increasing vascular resistance. This makes the skin turn paler because less blood reaches the surface, reducing the radiation of heat. On a larger level, vasoconstriction is one mechanism by which the body regulates and maintains mean arterial pressure.

Vasokonstriktion (von lat. vas ‚Gefäß‘ und constringere ‚zusammenschnüren‘) ist der medizinische Fachbegriff für Gefäßverengung. Eine Vasokonstriktion erfolgt hauptsächlich durch kleine Arterien und Arteriolen. Diese Blutgefäße werden auch als Widerstandsgefäße bezeichnet, da sie den eigentlichen Widerstand für den Blutfluss darstellen. Bei einer Verengung dieser Gefäße wird der Widerstand erhöht und somit die Strömungsgeschwindigkeit des Blutes erhöht. Zusätzlich verringert sich die Durchblutung hinter dem betroffenen Gefäßabschnitt. Lokale Vasokonstriktion und Vasodilatation (Erweiterung der Gefäße) dienen somit in erster Linie der Regulation der Organdurchblutung.

Un vasoconstrictor es una sustancia o estímulo ambiental que provoca vasoconstricción directa o indirectamente. Muchos vasoconstrictores actúan sobre receptores específicos de la vasopresina o sobre adrenorreceptores. Los vasoconstrictores son también utilizados clínicamente para incrementar la presión sanguínea o para reducir el flujo sanguíneo localmente.

Vasoconstrictie is het vernauwen van de bloedvaten door de daar aanwezige spieren. Dit gebeurt onder andere door angiotensine II en endotheline. De functie van vasoconstrictie is onder andere het verhogen van de bloeddruk, voor het compenseren voor een bloedtekort of het beïnvloeden van de nierfiltratie en om warmteverlies tegen te gaan doordat de vernauwde bloedvaten minder warmte kunnen afgeven aan de omgeving. Indien de omgevingstemperatuur hoger is dan de temperatuur van het bloed, zal het bloed juist warmte opnemen en daarom vindt er ook dan vasoconstrictie plaats. Vasoconstrictie kan ook klinische symptomen veroorzaken zoals ischemie.
