Vegetation is assemblages of plant species and the ground cover they provide. It is a general term, without specific reference to particular taxa, life forms, structure, spatial extent, or any other specific botanical or geographic characteristics. It is broader than the term flora which refers to species composition. Perhaps the closest synonym is plant community, but vegetation can, and often does, refer to a wider range of spatial scales than that term does, including scales as large as the global. Primeval redwood forests, coastal mangrove stands, sphagnum bogs, desert soil crusts, roadside weed patches, wheat fields, cultivated gardens and lawns; all are encompassed by the term vegetation.

Die Vegetation ist die Gesamtheit der Pflanzenformationen und Pflanzengesellschaften, die in einem Gebiet wachsen. Die Vegetation wird geprägt durch Klima, Boden, Relief, Gestein, Wasserhaushalt und durch die Einflüsse von Feuer, von Tieren und durch Menschen. Die durch das Großklima beeinflussten Vegetationsformationen sind auf der Erde zonal in Vegetationszonen angeordnet (hauptsächlich entsprechend den Klimazonen). Bei kleinräumigen Untersuchungen wird auch oft von einer Pflanzendecke gesprochen, bei der wissenschaftlichen Aufnahme spricht man generell von einer Vegetationsaufnahme.

Een plantengemeenschap of fytocoenon (meervoud: fytocoena) is een karakteristieke groep van planten in een vegetatie. Een plantengemeenschap heeft een zich regelmatig herhalende structuur zowel in hoogte (zoals mos-, kruid-, struik- en boomlaag) en breedte (zoals mozaïekpatronen, zomen) als in de tijd (seizoensaspecten). Een dergelijke groep van planten heeft een bestendigheid en stabiliteit, die niet direct af te leiden is uit die van de afzonderlijke plantensoorten en kan zichzelf binnen bepaalde grenzen in stand houden.

La végétation est l'ensemble des plantes qui poussent en un lieu donné selon leur nature. De la notion de végétation découlent les notions connexes de tapis végétal, de paysage végétal, de type de végétation et de formation végétale. On distingue la végétation naturelle composée de plantes sauvages dites spontanées de la végétation artificialisée composée de plantes cultivées. On considère ce qui pousse sur une surface donnée de sol, ou dans un milieu aquatique. On parle aussi de « couverture végétale » ou de « paysage végétal ».

Roślinność – termin w specjalistycznej terminologii geobotanicznej oznacza ogół zbiorowisk roślinnych na określonym obszarze, stanowiący przedmiot badań fitosocjologii. Termin uzupełniony o przymiotnik oznacza grupy zbiorowisk roślinnych, które łączy podobieństwo siedliskowe (np. roślinność wodna lub leśna), zasięgowe (np. roślinność wysokogórska lub azonalna), stopień przekształcenia (roślinność pierwotna lub półnaturalna).
