In the vertebrate spinal column, each vertebra is an irregular bone with a complex structure composed of bone and some hyaline cartilage, the proportions of which vary according to the segment of the backbone and the species of vertebrate.

Als Wirbel wird in der Anatomie das knöcherne Element der Wirbelsäule bezeichnet. Jeder Wirbel besteht aus dem Wirbelkörper, dem Wirbelbogen, zwei Querfortsätzen (je einer rechts und links), dem Dornfortsatz und vier Gelenkfortsätzen (beim Menschen: zwei obere und zwei untere). An einigen Wirbeln treten zwei Zitzenfortsätze (nur bei Brust- und Lendenwirbeln) und zwei zusätzliche Fortsätze (nur bei wenigen Säugetieren an den Lendenwirbeln) auf.

Se denomina vértebra a cada uno de los huesos que conforman la columna vertebral. En los seres humanos hay 33 vértebras durante la etapa fetal y en la niñez (7 cervicales + 12 torácicas + 5 lumbares + 5 sacras + 4 del cóccix), y durante la etapa adulta sólo hay 24 debido a que los huesos del sacro y el cóccix se unen convirtiéndose en un hueso cada uno. Cada una de ellas se encuentra separada de la inmediata inferior por medio de un disco intervertebral, exceptuando las 5 vértebras del sacro y las 4 del cóccix, debido a su unión.
