Aposematism (from Greek ἀπό apo away, σ̑ημα sema sign, coined by Edward Bagnall Poulton), perhaps most commonly known in the context of warning coloration, describes a family of antipredator adaptations where a warning signal is associated with the unprofitability of a prey item to potential predators. Aposematism is one form of an "advertising" signal (with many others existing, such as the bright colours of flowers which lure pollinators). The warning signal may take the form of conspicuous colours, sounds, odours or other perceivable characteristics. Aposematic signals are beneficial for both the predator and prey, both of which avoid potential harm.

Aposematismus, gelegentlich auch Warnfärbung genannt, bezeichnet in der Verhaltensbiologie die auffällige Färbung von Tieren, mit der potentiellen Fressfeinden nicht nur Präsenz, sondern auch Ungenießbarkeit und/oder Wehrhaftigkeit signalisiert wird. Aposematismus ist damit das Gegenteil der Tarnung.

L'aposématisme est la stratégie adaptative qui permet à certains animaux d'émettre un signal d'avertissement clairement perceptible pouvant être visuel (le plus souvent il s'agit d'une coloration d'avertissement), sonore ou chimique. On suppose que ce signal constitue un moyen de défense et qu'il avertit les prédateurs éventuels que ces animaux ostensibles représentent pour eux un danger et qu'ils doivent les éviter. Cette stratégie est ainsi à l'avantage à la fois du prédateur et de la proie.

Ubarwienie ostrzegawcze lub aposematyczne - typ ubarwienia ochronnego, jaskrawego lub kontrastowego, które służy łatwiejszemu rozpoznaniu (w odróżnieniu od kamuflażu) i pełni rolę ostrzegawczą zmniejszając częstość przypadkowych ataków. Stosowane jest przez organizmy mające skuteczne środki obrony przed drapieżnikami (w przypadku zwierząt) lub roślinożercami (u roślin), np. toksyny, kolce lub niejadalność.

Aposematism är ett slags adaptiv färgteckning när en art genom sitt utseende visar upp sina farliga egenskaper för att skrämma bort predatorer. Varningsfärger, som till exempel getingars svart- och gulrandiga bakkropp, eller korallormens färgglada ränder i bilden här bredvid, är det tydligaste exemplet.
