Acacia ( or ) is a monophyletic genus of flowering plants in the legume family, Fabaceae, commonly known as thorn trees or shittah trees. The genus name is derived via Latin from ancient Greek  . It was the name used by Theophrastus and Dioscorides to denote thorn trees, the word root being or , meaning "thorn" and "point" respectively. Before discovery of the New World, Europeans in the Mediterranean region were familiar with several species of Acacia, which they knew as sources of medicine, and had names for them that they inherited from the Greeks and Romans.

Wallace Delois Wattles (* 1860; † 1911) war ein amerikanischer Schriftsteller im Bereich der Neugeist-Bewegung (engl. New Thought Movement). Insbesondere sein 1910 erschienenes Werk The Science of Getting Rich („Die Wissenschaft des Reichwerdens“) erlangte 2006 neue Popularität, nachdem Rhonda Byrne es in einem Interview als Inspirationsquelle für ihren Film The Secret bezeichnet hatte.

Acacia is een geslacht uit de onderfamilie Mimosoideae, een onderfamilie in de vlinderbloemenfamilie (Leguminosae/Fabaceae). Alle soorten zijn houtig. Op het ogenblik is de omschrijving enigszins onzeker: het geslacht staat op het punt verdeeld te worden. Met 'acacia' als soort wordt meestal Robinia (Robinia pseudoacacia) bedoeld, die tot een ander geslacht behoort.

Akacja (Acacia Mill.) – rodzaj drzew i krzewów należący do rodziny bobowatych i podrodziny mimozowych. Liczbę gatunków ocenia się na ok. 1300. Występują w strefie tropikalnej i subtropikalnej całego świata, głównie w międzyzwrotnikowej Afryce, szczególnie Etiopii, Somalii, Kongo i RPA oraz Australii i Tasmanii (tu największe bogactwo – ok. 950 gatunków). W Azji najliczniejsze w Indiach i na Półwyspie Indochińskim. Na półkuli zachodniej północna granica zasięgu przebiega przez Teksas i Nowy Meksyk. Według innej klasyfikacji mimozowate stanowią osobną rodzinę, a rodzaj obejmuje około 600 (wówczas w Australii i na Tasmanii 300 gatunków). Akacje stanowią często składnik flory stepów i sawann.
