A wetland is a land area that is saturated with water, either permanently or seasonally, such that it takes on the characteristics of a distinct ecosystem. The primary factor that distinguishes wetlands from other land forms or water bodies is the characteristic vegetation of aquatic plants, adapted to the unique hydric soil. Wetlands play a number of roles in the environment, principally water purification, flood control, carbon sink and shoreline stability. Wetlands are also considered the most biologically diverse of all ecosystems, serving as home to a wide range of plant and animal life. Wetlands occur naturally on every continent except Antarctica, the largest including the Amazon River basin, the West Siberian Plain, and the Pantanal in South America. The water found in wetlands can be freshwater, brackish, or saltwater. The main wetland types include swamps, marshes, bogs, and fens; and sub-types include mangrove, carr, pocosin, and varzea.

Ein Feuchtgebiet oder Feuchtbiotop ist ein Gebiet, das im Übergangsbereich von trockenen zu dauerhaft feuchten Ökosystemen liegt. Der Begriff des Feuchtgebiets umfasst verschiedene Lebensraumtypen der Flora und Fauna wie Aue, Bruchwald, Feuchtwiese, Moor, Ried, Sumpf, Sumpfgraben oder Marschland, die an den ganzjährigen Überschuss von Wasser angepasst sind.

Drasland (Engels: wetland) is laagland dat permanent of tijdelijk verzadigd is/wordt door opkomend water. Het is dus een gebied op de grens tussen landelijk en waterrijk gebied, gebied dat zeer verschillend doch zeer afhankelijk is van beide. Drasland vertoont hierdoor een karakteristieke vegetatie, een zeer grote biodiversiteit, aangepast aan deze wisselend omstandigheden. Het gebied dient veelal op de eerste plaats als opslag voor overtollig water. Bij overstroming nemen zij het teveel aan water op en bij droogte geven zij dat water af en bewaren zo het natuurlijk evenwicht. Een drasland verschilt evenwel wat van een moeras dat meestal extreem drassige grond is terwijl een drasland een afwisseling van droog en nat kan zijn. In Nederland is de Waddenzee een voorbeeld van een drasland. Vroeger bestond Nederland veelal uit veen.

Une zone humide (ou milieu humide), dénomination dérivant du terme anglais wetland, est une région où le principal facteur d'influence du biotope et de sa biocénose est l'eau. On distingue généralement les zones humides côtières et marines différenciées par la proximité de la mer plus que par la salinité (des lacs salés peuvent exister à l'intérieur des terres). La Convention de Ramsar a retenu dans sa définition les zones littorales « où l’eau est stagnante ou courante, douce, saumâtre ou salée, y compris des étendues d’eau marine dont la profondeur à marée basse n’excède pas six mètres ».
