Winter is the coldest season of the year in polar and temperate climates, between autumn and spring. Winter is caused by the axis of the Earth in that hemisphere being oriented away from the Sun. Different cultures define different dates as the start of winter, and some use a definition based on weather. When it is winter in the Northern Hemisphere, it is summer in the Southern Hemisphere, and vice versa. In many regions, winter is associated with snow and freezing temperatures. The moment of winter solstice is when the sun's elevation with respect to the North or South Pole is at its most negative value (that is, the sun is at its farthest below the horizon as measured from the pole), meaning this day will have the shortest day and the longest night. The earliest sunset and latest sunrise dates outside the polar regions differ from the date of the winter solstice, however, and these depend on latitude, due to the variation in the solar day throughout the year caused by the Earth's elliptical orbit (see earliest and latest sunrise and sunset).

Der Winter (v. althochdeutsch: wintar; eigentl.: nasse Jahreszeit) ist die kälteste der vier Jahreszeiten in den subtropischen, gemäßigten, subpolaren und arktischen Klimazonen der Erde. Je nachdem, ob er gerade auf der Nord- oder der Südhalbkugel herrscht, spricht man vom Nordwinter oder Südwinter. Der Nordwinter findet gleichzeitig mit dem Südsommer statt.

Winter fue una banda pionera del Death/Doom estadounidense; originaria de New York, USA, compuso algunas de las canciones más pesadas y lentas del Doom metal por lo que algunas veces se considera más como una banda pionera del Funeral doom que del Death/Doom. Junto con Thergothon y diSEMBOWELMENT su estilo particular (demasiado lento para América y demasiado crudo para Europa) no gozó de la popularidad de sus contemporáneos como Paradise Lost y My Dying Bride, y se desmembró en 1994 dejando un demo y dos LP completos.

De winter is een van de vier seizoenen in de gematigde en polaire streken. Het afwisselen van de winter met de andere seizoenen wordt veroorzaakt door de schuine stand van de aardas. In de winter staat op het noordelijk halfrond de aardas van de zon af gewend en in de zomer juist naar de zon toe gericht. Op het zuidelijk halfrond is dit omgekeerd, zodat de winter zich daar juist afspeelt tijdens de zomer van het noordelijk halfrond. Het meest kenmerkend aan de winter is hierdoor behalve de in vergelijking met andere seizoenen lage temperaturen de korte dagduur.
