Xanthophylls (originally phylloxanthins) are yellow pigments that occur widely in nature and form one of two major divisions of the carotenoid group; the other division is formed by the carotenes. The name is from Greek xanthos (ξανθός, "yellow") and phyllon (φύλλον, "leaf"), due to their formation of the yellow band seen in early chromatography of leaf pigments.

Xanthophylle (von altgr.  xanthós „gelb“ und phyllon „Blatt“) sind neben den Carotinen die zweite wichtige Gruppe der Carotinoide. Die Xanthophylle sind – ähnlich wie die Carotine auch – meist Tetraterpene, enthalten aber sauerstoffhaltige Gruppen in Form von Hydroxy- (-OH), Carbonyl- (-C=O) und Carboxygruppen (-COOH) sowie seltener auch von Oxirangruppen.

Les xanthophylles (n.f. ou m.) sont des molécules de couleur jaune dérivées des carotènes, par ajout d'atomes d'oxygène (fonctions alcool, cétone, époxy, …). Elles appartiennent à la famille des caroténoïdes. On les rencontre dans les chloroplastes ou les chromoplastes des cellules végétales, notamment dans les pétales de certaines fleurs de couleur jaune, orange ou rouge, et chez les algues, par exemple les algues brunes (Phéophycées), où elles masquent la chlorophylle.

Ksantofile – grupa organicznych związków chemicznych, barwników roślinnych należących do karotenoidów, tlenowe pochodne karotenów. Ksantofile są pomocniczymi barwnikami fotosyntezy. Pełnią także funkcję przeciwutleniaczy, przez co chronią komórkę, a zwłaszcza chloroplasty przed szkodliwym działaniem reaktywnych form tlenu. Dzięki wielu sprzężonym wiązaniom podwójnym nadają żółtą, pomarańczową lub czerwoną barwę kwiatom, owocom, a także żółtku jaj (luteina).
